Review
The depth of her analysis of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is powerful and deeply grounded. It is a different writing style – very relaxed and personal in contrast to Cynthia Bourgeault’s Book “The Meaning of Mary Magdalene” I love both books for different reasons. Cynthia, an Episcopal priest, brings a very grounded and technical exploration of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Meggan, a feminist theologian, approaches the topics from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, in a more relaxed and more personal way. I love her bringing in Joan of Arc and connecting her story more to the divine feminine. Meggan is most definitely a strong feminist and allows that perspective to influence the way she explores the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. She dives into the importance of the ritual of the anointing of the feet of Jesus in a more in depth way than other books I have read. She also shares powerful stories about the role of females in the early Christian church and the way the church evolved to exclude females as leaders. A recommended read for anyone interested in her role as the Disciple to the Disciples and the rise of the patriarchal structure of the church. I highly recommend this book.
